Favourite Characters from the Whoniverse 6/?
↳ Donna Noble
‘Donna. I’m a human being. Maybe not the stuff of legend but every bit as important as Time Lords, thank you.’

“Donna. Oh, Donna Noble. I am so sorry. But we had the best of times. The best.”
See I really feel like Donna was his best friend and that means a lot more to me than his love for Amelia (who I think he was kind of a father figure to tbh) and Rose. And like. IDK. I think the scene where he erases her mind is the saddest scene in Doctor Who. Doctor Donna 4eva.

a+ steven moffat. pulling women jokes.
classic.
oM Y FcKING GOD its literally the year 1207 anD THEYRE CELIBATE IDIOT MONKS WHO PROBABLY RLY DO THINK WOMEN ARE EVIL SPIRITS AND STILL BELIEVE CHILDBIRTH IS PUNISHMENT FOR EVE’S SIN christ
THANK YOU
It’s not the monk’s reaction that is the problem here. We get that it’s 1207, and that women are treated shittily and such.
it’s the Doctor’s reply that shits me off
1) it’s the fact that he doesn’t try to dissuade the monk of the notion that it’s something evil
2) it’s the fucking look on his face as he says ‘it’s a woman.’ Facial expressions are important when conveying the meaning of something. The way the Doctor purses his lips at the end of his sentence, it’s very sassy and condescending, it’s conveying the message ‘it’s much worse than that; a woman.’
it’s fucking annoying, and you know why?
It’s the Doctor.
The Doctor. You know, that lovely, near-immortal being, that’s pretty dedicated to saving people and making sure everyone’s treated equally and given a fair go. And he’s conveying the message ‘ugh, oh my god, women, amirite? talk talk talk, knows nothing.’
it’s the equivalent of a dudebro turning to his buddies while he’s on the phone with his girlfriend, and making a ‘yap yap yap’ motion with his hands.
it’s a fucking cheap joke, and it’s inconsistent with the Doctor’s character.
I don’t give a royal fuck that the monk crossed himself. I get that attitudes towards women were pretty shitty during the 13th century. Except it’s the Doctor making the joke. it’s uncomfortable and inconsistent and actually a little heartbreaking because women are the punchline.
that’s not right. thousands of kids watch Doctor Who and look up to the Doctor. If the Doctor uses ‘women’ as a punchline, then what are all those kids going to do? teaching kids that it’s ok for women to be a joke? ugh, no thank you.
the thing is, do you know how easily this could have been avoided? A simple tweak of the line from ‘it’s a woman,’ to ‘it’s just a woman,’ with a dismissive shake of the head, to tell the Monk ‘don’t be silly, it’s just another human being.’
that’s all it would have taken.
